Juliu Horvath, a Hungarian
dancer and gymnast, developed Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methodologies to combat
crippling injuries from years of intense dance practice. Horvath refused to
accept traditional medicine's harsh diagnosis and, regarding the body as a system
capable of self-healing, created this new discipline to heal his body. These
practices combine a release of the body's energies with elements of yoga, meditation,
and breathwork, while emphasizing spinal mobilization. Gyrokinesis training
differs from Gyrotonic training in using stool and mat work instead of machines,
thus making these movements accessible to anyone to facilitate three dimensional
movement and expand range of motion.
